On Wednesday, October 24, 2019, thousands around the nation celebrated UNITY DAY!
Unity Day, started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in October 2011, is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. This is a day when we can come together in one giant, ORANGE message of hope and support. The call to action is simple: wear and share the color orange. This vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, showing that we care about bullying prevention—and are united for KINDNESS, ACCEPTANCE and INCLUSION.
In the weeks following UNITY DAY, it has been inspiring to learn how individuals, entire schools, and businesses celebrated.
One of my favorite quotes is from a teenager who united his neighborhood by encouraging everyone to join him in planting seeds for a community garden. He has plans to get donations to put flowers along the fences, seat cushions on the wooden benches, and plant shade trees - all to make it feel more welcoming. When he was asked about why he is doing it, he shared, "I noticed that change is needed, and the biggest factor in change is UNITY. When you and your community unite anything and everything is possible. The National Bullying Prevention Center opened my eyes to really be the change in my community and to know that I didn't have to wait until I was grown to create change, but that I could start at any early age."
We are grateful to this young man for caring, take action and sharing his Incredible wisdom.
